Dream on: Chapter 9 Temple Miracles
I combed those records for hundreds of hours, obsessed, entering every Šimovič, Schimovitch, Simovits, into Family Search. The spellings changed with every government that was in charge as the decades passed. I began to recognize their friends and neighbors who had children around the same times they did, whose children died around the same times they did and marriages between families. I began to feel that I KNEW the people of Kulpin...their joys and sorrows, their jobs, renters, sub renters, farmers, ferriers, and some fancy people who moved in who were nobility…it said so in the record.
I implored family members to take our people to the temple and get their work done for them so they could move on in the spirit world if they chose. Then one day Adam called me. He had taken a few of the men’s names to the temple and while he was in the initiatory ceremony the ordinance worker stopped talking.
“This man is here!” he exclaimed. “Are these family names?” he asked looking at my brother. “Yes, they are.” he replied. “Well this man is here! This has never happened to me before. He turned and left the booth to get another ordinance worker from the desk. And came back in saying, “The man is here for his work! This has never happened to me before.”
“Yes brother, just continue with the ordinance.” said the ordinance worker who had been brought in to see the man from the Spirit World who had come to accept his initiatory covenants. He patted the excited worker on the back, “just keep going.”
A few names later the ordinance worker stopped again exclaiming, “There’s another man! He’s here. This has never happened to me before!” Adam saw nothing, he felt something, but didn’t see. But now we knew, for all of our efforts, Andreas and Mihael Šimovič had accepted the gospel of Jesus Christ and had shown up to make their covenants with Him in the temple in Medford, Oregon.
Months later, my youngest sister, Ali called to tell me her experience in the Provo Temple. At this time, Ali had a bit of a hard edge towards the Seable/Šimovič side of the family. The history of abandonment, abuse and bad choices that affected generations of people made her credulous and resistant to doing names from dad’s side of the family. In Reiki, she had had an experience where Paul showed up, to witness the residual of his negative choices. She also had an experience where grandma Seable showed up.
Our grandfather, Paul, who had immigrated from Yugoslavia in the early 1900s was an alcoholic who had sexually abused his two step daughters, and beaten and molested others of his 7 children and cheated on grandma until she finally divorced him. We had some cousins who would NOT come to a family reunion if it was called a Seable reunion (he had changed his name from Šimovič to Seable) but if we called it a “Blackburn” reunion after Grandma then they would consider it.
Ali was dutifully taking female Šimovič names to the temple, thinking that they probably wouldn’t accept any of it. As she was participating in the initiatories, the ordinance worker asked how to pronounce a name.. Ali, half joking, half derisive declared she had no idea how those people said their names. As if the very spelling of their names were yet another offense to later generations.
Suddenly the woman whose name was in question entered the room. Ali and the ordinance worker felt her presence and immediately knew how to say her name, “Elisabetha.” She was full of the fire of the covenant and commitment to Jesus Christ. Ali was astounded. The woman sat down inside of Ali to receive the blessing.
Ali asked the woman, “Who are you? How are we related?” and she simply replied, “SHHHHH! I’m making my covenants.” Then got up and left. Ali was surprised and humbled.
A year later, one of my cousins who was in his late 80s had a vision of grandpa Paul Šimovič-Seable preaching in Spirit Prison like Paul the Apostle. This man was astounded and declared, “If that man can repent, then maybe I can forgive.”
Again, the blessing of doing the family history work was healing our father’s family forward and backward.
